Beneath Beauty's Bad Reputation

Healing With Adelfa’s Magic?nerium_oleander

Rick A Hilario II,   BLA / MSc

She puts on a stunning display as nature has endowed her: in white, yellow, peach, pink and mauve to the deepest reds. She can be petite but usually, she stands tall. She’s the oleander ( Nerium oleander ), a show-off and a most rewarding one in a dozen or so varieties that tolerate drought and little care. Better known in the Philippines by its common name, the adelfa, it belongs to a genus of other profuse bloomers which like it, are highly toxic plants such as the frangipanis, the periwinkle and allamanda. Perhaps, oleander’s only non-toxic relative is the quite plain-looking carissa that bears edible green berries, the natal plum.  But the oleander has been such a maligned beauty. Because of its toxic properties, it has been delisted as recommended planting in many counties in the United States and elsewhere. All parts of oleander, fresh, wilted or dried, are highly toxic. The toxins in it are oleandrin and nerioside, both quick-acting even in small amounts, producing symptoms similar to digitalis. Oleander poisoning, in its initial stages causes vomiting, diarrhea and arrhythmia eventually leading to coma and cardiac arrest. Nevertheless, healing with oleander therapy has produced surprising results. Because of this, it has become popular among those for whom stage 3 or 4 cancers have metastized  and for other auto-immune disorders that have  advanced to a point where doctors of conventional medicine have given up on the cases. This article endorses no product nor process but shares information that may offer hope to those who may need it most.

Crossing Thresholds into the Future Rick A Hilario II,       MSc /  MPALA  /  MPIEP

The new website marks a fresh shift in the Society’s outlook. As the President, Nonito Dolera puts it, FNS  has now entered the information technology threshold. Everything about the Society can now be accessed any convenient time, or 24/7 in business jargon. My colleague in Manila and fellow landscape architect, Emmanuel Viado, did a good job in designing and administering this interactive website.  Many may find electronic communication a challenge,  but where I am now collaborating with an international team of experts, many happen to be also seniors who find electronic transactions and e-commerce fast and convenient. We update and share files, make our travel bookings and purchases, pay bills, set schedules, float ideas and confirm our worst fears through the websites. It’s a way of staying connected.

FNSPI Trip to Banaue, Bontoc and Sagada

After a few attempts, the trip to Banaue finally happened! On February 9, 2006 at 8:00 am, a delegation of seventeen (17) FNSP tourists departed Manila for Banaue via the North Express Way.  A brief stopover for lunch at the Marquez Restaurant in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija did not dampen the excitement of the group.  After almost 9 hours on the road, the contingent finally arrived in Banaue to enjoy the sunset.

After checking-in at the famous Banaue Hotel, a sumptuous dinner ushered in the “Karaoke session” that showcased the hidden talents of the members.
